The city of Cardiff

Welcome to Cardiff, the capital of Wales and the youngest capital in Europe. It is a Roman city and is now one of the liveliest British cities, where you will be able to find sports facilities and world class culture features, historical attractions and the traveler doctor. It is a city of modern air, nestled at the mouth of the river Taff, in a cove on the South coast of Wales.

In the centre of the compact city of Cardiff, you can find the Cardiff Castle. Its fairytale walls and towers hide more than 2,000 years of history, which started with the Romans, the first to build a fortress in this place. The National Cardiff Museum houses the national collections of archeology, geology and natural history of Wales, as well as one of the finest art collections in Europe. Also, the Wales Millennium Centre is one of the most varied and lively performing arts centers in Europe. As if that wasn´t enough, there are also other things you can do in the bay of Cardiff.

What to see in Cardiff

Main attractions

In the centre of the compact city of Cardiff, you can find Cardiff Castle.

Bars and restaurants

Just 5 minutes from the city centre, you can find the elegant Mermaid Quay, the perfect place to recharge your batteries after the hustle and bustle of the tourist day, or to relax with a romantic dinner on the promenade. For whisky lovers, there is the Penderyn Distillery, the only distillery in Wales and one of the smallest in the world. And if you go to Cardiff in September, you can´t miss the Great British Cheese Festival, a cheese festival where you will find more than 450 amazing British cheeses to try, taste and buy.

Sport

In the world of sport, Cardiff is a champion. The Millennium Stadium,  of international fame, is the stadium that welcomes Welsh rugby and football, as well as the place that they usually organise the British Speedway Grand Prix. In Cardiff City Stadium you will be able to watch Cardiff City FC Football games, the Welsh football club with the most fans, or you can go to the SWALEC stadium to see the cricket matches in Glamorgan Cricket Club. If you like golf, don´t miss the opportunity to follow the footsteps of the professionals of the Ryder Cup in The Celtic Manor Resort.

Shopping

Don´t forget the 6 Eduardian shopping centers in the city, that you will find in the Castle Quarter and Morgan Quarter. Try to find Spillers Records, the oldest record shop in the world. If you fancy visiting the typical British chains and the well known designer shops, go to St David´s, the capital Shopping Centre and Queen´s Arcade. We recommend that you take your own bags, as in Wales the shops charge 5p per bag.

Art and culture

Cardiff is one of the most creative cities with a lively cultural environment. For the more traditional people, you will like St David´s Hall, the national auditorium in Wales where they celebrate the Welsh Proms. In the Wales Millennium Centre, you can see the National Opera of Wales, and the Welsh National Orchestra of the BBC, and don´t forget the concerts that are organised in the lobby at lunchtime. If you fancy something different, visit the Norwegian Church, where author Roald Dahl was baptised and is now a famous cultural center where all kinds of events are organised, from concerts to workshops and classes.

Music and nightlife

If you think Cardiff is a city full of life in the day, wait until you see it at night. The nightlife in the city revolves around St Mary Street, full of pubs and located in the city center, sophisticated seaside bars in Cardiff Bay, and the huge and lively Greyfriars. In this city, you will find live music every night of the week in local bars such as Barfly, Clwb Ifor Bach and Coal Exchange.

For families

If you have a Doctor Who fan in your house, a magical adventure awaits. Cardiff is the birthplace of this science fiction series and the Doctor Who Experience is obligatory for all fans. The interactive trip into the world of the doctor will offer you the opportunity to pilot the Tardis and face the Daleks. If you want more, visit Techniquest, a centre of scientific discoveries that includes a planetarium, a theatre dedicated to science and a room dedicated to the discoveries that covers all kinds of topics, from fossils to forensic science.

History and heritage

If Wales is the "land of the Castles", Cardiff should be the "Capital of the Castles". As well as the magnificent Cardiff Castle, you will also be able to find fairytale castles: Castell Coch, the Castle of Twmpath, the Llandaff Bishop´s Palace and the Castle of Saint Fagans. The Welsh Castles have a large and fascinating history that includes the Romans, Vikings, and the Normans. Discover the true story of the Welsh Castles in The Cardiff Story, a free museum that narrates the history of the city through the eyes of the people.
