Moving around the city

The city of San Francisco has one of the best public transport networks in the United States, which will be of great help when you travel. Additionally, many forms of transport cover the same routes. 
The transport authority of the city is San Francisco Municipal Railway - Muni website: http://www.sfmuni.com responsible for trams, buses and light rail. 

Buses and trams operate the same routes and the rates are equal. 

  • The light rail goes through Market Street to the Mission District and Noe Valley (line J), Ingleside District (K-Line), Subset District (lines L, M, and N), and Castro, Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf (line F ). 
  • The subway runs to Market Street, stopping at Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, Civic Centre and San Francisco with the East bay and Daly City. The metro runs from 04:30 to 24:00. The tickets can be bought from machines at the stations.

Districts and neighbourhoods in San Francisco

  • Union Square: The most important and lively square in San Francisco. In the square and the adjacent streets, you will find shops, bars, restaurants and a lot of atmosphere. 
  • Fisherman´s Whard: The old port of San Francisco is nowadays one of the most touristic places in the city. Here the famous sea lions live. 
  • Yerba Buena Gardens is one of the most important parks in the city centre. 
  • Chinatown: welcomes one of the biggest Chinese populations outside Asia. 
  • Fillmore Street on Fillmore District is one of the preferred areas to live for people in San Francisco. 
  • Haight Ashbury is the alternative and hippie area of San Francisco 
  • Japantown: the biggest and oldest Japanese neighbourhood in the United States. 
  • Little Italy: with a European environment, "Little Italy" is a beautiful neighbourhood to walk around and eat in, in one of the many italian restaurants. 

At night in San Francisco 

The nightlife in San Francisco is active and bustling. The bars and restaurants are full from early on until very late. There are more than 2,000 places where you can have a drink, so being thirsty will not be a problem. The opening hours and dress code varies from bar to bar, but in general, the attitude is quite relaxed. San Francisco has many entertainment areas and nightlife for all tastes. The neighbourhoods with the most atmosphere are: Downtown, South of Market (SoMa) and Castro. 

Generally, the restaurants, clubs and bars can serve alcohol until 02:00. The minimum drinking age is 21. They will always ask for ID to get into bars. Smoking is not allowed.

Located in the historical Jackson Square, next to North Beach, Chinatown, the Ferry Building, the Financial District and the pier.

It is a totally rennovated hotel-residence and has a great history which welcomes international students. Even though the building is more than a century old, the bathrooms, shared kitchen, dining room and living room (with television) have been totally rennovated. 

It is a mixed residence: the students share the facilities and the common areas, but the bedrooms will only be shared with students of the same sex.

Getting to San Francisco 

The San Francisco International Airport is located 23 km (14 miles) south of the city.

From the airport to the city 

  • Train: The BART train transfers passengers in 30 minutes to the centre of San Francisco. There are also suburban trains that go to neighbouring counties such as San Mateo and San Jose.

  • Bus: Buses that run from the airport to San Francisco, 24 hours a day. 
  • MiniShuttle: These are minibuses that take passengers right to their destination in San Francisco. Departing from the arrivals platforms. This service is much cheaper than a taxi. The only downside is that it may take longer because it makes different stops. The price is $ 15 approx.
